    Ms. Katherine Townsend

Lance C. Townsend knew he wanted to fly at an early age, about 9 years old. His father made a commitment to him at that time to pay for half of his flying lessons when he was old enough; he never forgot. At 16 years old he began his flying lessons and hasn't stopped since. Upon graduation from high school he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He was accepted into the flight leadership/flight fellowship program, an honor accorded to the top 2% of the class. This program accelerated his flight training allowing him to become a flight instructor for the University, and provided a scholarship. He graduated in 1983 with degrees in Aeronautical Science and Aircraft Engineering Technology.
In 1983 he began flying as a charter pilot, working his way through progressively more complicated aircraft and building his flight hours. During this time, he was flying charters for a locally based newspaper corporation. As testimony to his flying skills and knowledge about operating aircraft he was hired by The McClatchy Company in 1993 as a corporate pilot. He is now their Director of Flight Operations flying a British Aerospace Hawker 800...and 31 years later still loves flying.
