In 1958-1961 while stationed at the US Army Ordnance Tank-Automotive Command Research & Development Land Locomotion Lab, then Captain (USA) Lodewick participated in basic research with simulated lunar soils, the results of which were later used in design of the lunar excursion module -- the "Lunar Rover." Captain Lodewick was allowed to inscribe his name on a gold-sheathed leg of the first lunar lander.
