    Lieutenant John W Skerratt was an aviator in World War I, serving from 1917 to 1919. He joined the Signal Corps of the Army when war was declared and trained as a cadet at Princeton and Acadia Florida for flight school. He was a pilot and flight instructor at Love Field, Dallas, Texas.

    Mr. Skerratt maintained his interest in aviation throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Air Wing of the American Legion. As a visitor at Andrews Air Force Base (Camp Springs, Maryland) for his 88th birthday he was honored by an informal standing ovation in recognition of his early experience as an aviator in WWI.
