In October 1917 LTC Blakeman was assigned as Officer-in-Charge of the American Bombardment School at Clermont-Ferrand, France. During 1918 he was assigned to a French bombing squadron, l'Escadrille Br 29, and flew the Breguet type 14 B.2. In May of 1918 he was awarded the French "Croix de Guerre" for combat heroism. He also flew the French Nieuport, type 28, fighter.
During World War II he served in England and was in charge of an American intelligence unit concerned with the collection and distribution of escape and evasion information in the United Kingdom and overseas.
He is a "Founder Member" of The Order of Daedalians, a fraternity of military pilots started in the 1930s by World War I pilots.
