LtCol Bernhard served on active duty from 1968-1978. In 1978, she separated and received a Reserve Commission. She served in the Reserves until retirement in 1995. LtCol Bernhard served in Texas, Thailand, California, Washington and New York states. Service in Washington State was with the AF Education-With-Industry Program, where she was one of the first two female officers selected for this program. She served in the Administration and Contracting Career Fields. As a Reserve Officer, she served as a USAF Academy Liaison Officer, continuing after retirement, for a total of 20 years.
