    Bob Sandberg was one of a small number of enlisted men who became sergeant pilots before WWII. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt in May 1943. In Jan 1944, he flew his B-24, with crew, from the U. S. to Africa via Brazil.
    Bob flew many missions from N. Africa and So. Italy. He received the European Theater ribbon with five Bronze Stars , and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
    Bob was "demobilized" as a captain USAAF when the war ended and was hired by Delta Air Lines in late 1945. He retired from Delta in 1980 at age 60, one of their most highly respected senior pilots. He served in the Air Force Reserves from 1945 to 1964.
