Marnell Smith retired from NASA Ames Research Center in 1987 after 32 years of service. He started his career in 1955 as a Aerospace Model Maker and finished his career as the manager of the High Temperature Materials Development Laboratory, where he was instrumental in the development of the Space Shuttle Thermal Projection System.
