Michael flew 100 combat missions in Vietnam for the US Air Force. He received The Distinguished Flying Cross and ten air medals for his flights in the Phantom F-4 during the Vietnam War. The Flying Cross citation states: First Lieutenant Michael F. Busick distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Pilot over North Vietnam on 30 May 1968. On that date, Lieutenant Busick led a flight of two F-4D Fighter-bombers on a night armed reconnaissance mission over a vital hostile supply route. Without the aid of flares or moonlight, Lieutenant Busick maneuvered his aircraft at low altitude against convoy traffic carrying material to insurgent forces in the Republic of Vietnam. With his flight under intense fire from hostile defensive position, Lieutenant Busick made repeated, devastating attacks in successfully interdicting the convoy and silencing four antiaircraft gun positions. The extraordinary leadership demonstrated by Lieutenant Busick seriously disrupted the re-supply efforts of Communist forces in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Busick reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
