Michael G. Spitzer was involved in aviation for most of his professional career. He was a Sky Marshall in the early 1970’s, then became a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain. He then served as a pilot in the Air National Guard. He subsequently went to work for United States Customs, as a pilot in the Miami Air Branch, which specialized in airborne interdiction. For the remainder of his career, he flew a wide array of both fixed and rotary wing aircraft for Customs and became a manager with the rank of Air Supervisor.
