- Entered the United States Navy during World War II.
- Based out of San Diego, CA and was sent to the Philippines.
- Upon the completion of World War II, attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC.
- Always wanted to fly planes but was ineligible due to lack of 20/20 vision.
- Instead, has spent a lifetime learning about planes from the ground through visiting museums, and reading books and magazines on the subject.
- Wife -- Mrs Anne Vick Birke; daughter -- Mrs Christin Shea Oakes.
