    James Scholl was born in Utica, New York, on October 22, 1909. He attended grade and high schools in Utica, graduating from The Utica Free Academy in 1928. He received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1934, and a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from George Washington University in 1943.
    After having been associated with the General Electric Company, Schenectady, New York, and Chas. W. Cole Consulting Engineers, South Bend, Indiana, James entered the Federal Service in 1939. He received eight months of training at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, on the intricate construction of Naval vessels, and was then transferred to the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, Washington, D. C, in 1940, where he had duties related to the development, installation, and maintenance of catapults and launching equipment. He had patents on catapult equipment he had designed. When he retired in 1971, he was Technical Director, Division of Ships Installations.
    James musical education began with piano lessons at age seven. Throughout grade and high school, he performed solo and in trio with his two brothers who played clarinet and violin. While attending college, her performed in piano concerts, played tuba and bassoon in the University of Kentucky Band and Orchestra, and sang in the University of Kentucky Men's Glee Club.
    James was married to Harriett Schaefer in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1939. They were the parents of one child, Stephen, born January 22, 1945, who died at age four.
    Harriett and James moved from their home in Fairfax, Virginia, to the Charlestown Retirement Community in April 1989. Mr. Scholl, an always caring and loving husband, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 5. 1999. at age 90.
