    As a journalist he covered the American space program from its inception. He broadcast these historic events on the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company stations, American Broadcasting Company (ABC) radio and television networks, Mutual Broadcasting System, and National Broadcasting Company, and the Cable News Network.

    He was a pioneer in developing space and science reporting for the broadcast medium.

    Mr. Slade also became well known for his coverage of aviation issues and aviation history. He was also a Civil War enthusiast and author of the book "Firestorm at Gettysburg," the story of the citizens of Gettysburg who remained in the thick of the battle July 1 to 4, 1863.
