    Johnny was born December 25, 1930 in El Dorado, Arkansas. During January 1951 he enlisted in the USAF. His first duty assignment was as a Link flight simulator operator.

    In March 1952 he entered the Aviation Cadet Program at Barstow, Florida and received his pilot's wings with Class 53-B at Reese AFB, Texas.

    He prepared for Korean combat in Douglas B-26s, but soon found himself with the 85th Bomb Squadron, 47th Bomb Wing, Sculthorpe RAF Station, UK flying B-45 Tornado bombers.

    He graduated from Louisiana Tech with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1958 and worked for Boeing Transport Systems Designs on six projects over 34 years. As of 2000 he maintains his pilot skills.
