Carey was shot down over Huls, Germany on June 22, 1943. He spent 22 months as a prisoner of war and escaped in April 1945. Captain Carey received the Bronze Star for voluntarily, at risk of his life, successfully engaging in highly secret activities, sending information via code to the OSS office in the United States, and receiving escape materials from them.

After the war he was a private plane owner for many years.
