Paul Smathers was was a distinguished military graduate from the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps program at North Carolina State University. He spent 28 years on active duty as a fighter pilot, remaining current in military aircraft all 28 years. After retirement he flew F-102s, F-100s, and F-106s as drone targets via remote control at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
