He enlisted as a Private and advanced in rank to the grade of Colonel. He served nearly nine years overseas in England, Guam, Japan, Korea and South Vietnam. His stateside assignments included Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio and Texas. He received the Legion of Merit (1OLC), Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (2OLC), Air Force Commendation Medal (2OLC), Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal w/1 BS, Korean Service Medal w/4BS, Vietnam Service Medal w/3BS, Air Force Service Longevity Award w/7OLC, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device and other awards. On September 20, 1950, Lieutenant Schulz was assigned to a search and destroy day mission. He was flying as a wingman in a flight of two B-26 aircraft. The weather was marginal in the target area but he was able to complete the mission despite the poor weather conditions. With the use of rockets he personally destroyed three boxcars at Okchon, Korea, and damaged one locomotive southeast of Taejon. At Sintansin, he bombed and strafed marshalling yards leaving four boxcars burning and the tracks damaged. As a result of this highly successful mission, supplies destined for the enemy were destroyed or damaged. Because of the outstanding air-manship displayed by Lieutenant Schulz, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

During the next twenty years he served at a number of Stateside and overseas assignments and ended his career with two satisfying and rewarding assignments. First, during 1970 –1974, he served as Commander, Air Force Contract Maintenance Center (AFCMC), Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. He had command responsibility for thirty (30) AFCMC detachments located primarily at commercial facilities around the world and within the United States who were performing, under contract with the United States Air Force.
