Second Lieutenant Robert Berry, 23, former 'Record editorial employee and West Chester State Teachers' College senior, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross "for outstanding achievements in flights in the Northwestern Africa and European theaters of operations."

Berry enlisted in June 1941, and was commissioned in the Army Air Corps at Midland Field, Texas, in May, 1942. He was sent overseas the following month and was bombardier of the "Snoozin' Susan," based in England for five months. Last December, he was transferred to Africa.

"Lieutenant Berry has displayed an unusually high degree of courage and professional skill as a bombardier," the citation read.

His plane was severely damaged on a bombing mission over Palermo, two members of the crew were killed and two others hurt, but he dropped his bombs squarely on the target and, manning his nose guns, assisted in dispersing attacking aircraft. He then aided his wounded comrades.

In a recent letter to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Samson Berry, Sr., of 5053 Ludlow St., Berry said that fliers were over Tunis and Bizerte so often they called it the "milk run." Later, he wrote that he had transported five German generals, one of whom had cropped hair and wore a monocle. The others, he said, "looked like tired businessmen."

Berry has completed 50 flying missions against the enemy and is expected home shortly on a furlough. A brother, Sam is a Record reporter. Another brother, Charles, twin of Sam, left The Record two weeks ago for a war job in Texas.
