    Fr. Arenz was born in Iowa (1924), graduated Oregon State College (1944). Aeronautical engineer for six years, Douglas Aircraft Company, developing A-26 and DC-6 airplanes, Nike and Sparrow air defense missiles. Entered Society of Jesus (SJ), the Jesuit religious order (1950); ordained a Catholic priest (1965). Ph.D. in Aeronautics, Caltech (1964). During academic career of 35 years, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at several Jesuit universities. While dean at Parks Aeronautical College of St. Louis University became a pilot. Consultant on spacecraft structures to Lockheed Missiles and Space; also researched aerospace materials at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and various scientific centers in United States, Europe, and Australia. As visiting scientist at Johnson Space Center developed designs to protect against meteoroid impact. Senior analyst (1984) at Office of Technology Assessment of the United States Congress in a study of the U.S. civilian space program. Scientific memberships include Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Partially retired in 2004, Fr. Arenz has authored 40 research publications, provided spiritual ministry to many, and had the pleasure of giving the invocation at a memorable 1975 Los Angeles AIAA dinner honoring Jimmy Doolittle.
