Robert A. Ullman trained as a belly gunner on a B-17 in the 8th Air Force 398th Bomb Group 601st Bomb Squadron. The war in Europe ended shortly after her arrived in England. He was then sent to Florida for retraining in a B-25 but the war was over before he was sent over. Although he never actually flew a combat mission, he was always made to feel welcome at bomb group reunions. One of the greatest joys of his life was getting to fly a B-17, the Aluminum Overcast, 51 years after the war.
