The citation reads in part:

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Junior Grade Robert Adam Wolf, United States Naval Reserve for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as a pilot in Fighting Squadron ONE, attached to the U.S.S. YORKTOWN, in action against major units of the Japanese fleet during the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, June 20, 1944. Realizing that he possibly would not have sufficient fuel to return to base, Lieutenant (then Ensign) Wolf carried out a bold bombing and strafing attack against the enemy fleet. His cool courage in the face of great odds and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Wolf and the United States naval service.
