Our father, Roy A Shaffer, Jr., grew up in rural Central Pennsylvania. His love for aviation started at a young age and only grew from there. As a young man he was able to fulfill a dream of a pilot's license and could often be found flying the skies in his Cessna 150. Unfortunately, as he started his family he sold his beloved plane. We still remember seeing the plane at a local airport. It was a pretty plane from the point of view of two little girls, nice orange and turquoise, a Howard Johnson special. Even though being in the skies as the pilot was a thing of the past, he made sure his first child had flight at an early age. Well before the age of one, 1 was up for my first plane ride in a Piper Cherokee Warrior at the Montoursviile, PA airport. Dad continued to instill a love of airplanes in us and we spent many family vacations at air shows being towed around in a Radio Flyer wagon. As we grew older Dad introduced us to the Air and Space Museum and we all grew to love it. We were always amazed at one talent that he has, on any occasion he could identify any airplane even though it was just a dot in the sky. He also was very fond of small local airports such as Kutztown and a tiny one in Sunbury, PA. Dad is even sharing his love of aviation with his son in law and every year they attend Sentimental Journeys. Dad has taught us about aviation greats like Howard Hughes, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager and Charles Lindbergh. He can often be $seen pouring over Trader Plane, Hopefully this love and passion for of aviation will pass onto the next generation into his grandson Carter who we all joke that we hope he becomes an aeronautical engineer. So this is in honor of our father who taught us a lot about the world through his love of aviation
