CITATION TO ACCOMPANY THE AWARD OF
    THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS
    TO
    RUDOLPH A. VALENTINO

Lieutenant Colonel Rudolph A, Valentino distinguished himself by heroism in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a C-130E Aircraft Commander near An Hoa, Republic of Vietnam, on 15 October 1968. On that date, Colonel Valentino flew his battle-damaged aircraft at low altitude through intense ground fire, typhoon conditions, and unfamiliar mountainous terrain, and landed on a short, narrow, and perilously slick runway to effectively deliver reinforcements and vital combat supplies to that Marine outpost. Returning, he voluntarily evacuated eighty five wounded and combat fatigued Marines to safety. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Valentino reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force,
