Served Army Air Force March, 1943 to October 8, 1945. S/Sgt Left Waist Gunner, Armorer, B-17, 15th Air Force, 5th Wing, 97th Bomb Group, 342nd Squadron, with 20 missions over Europe. Stationed Amendola, Italy. Oldest Bomb Group in Europe, with a total of 483 missions. We were the original 8th Air Force, the 12th Air Force, and finally, the 15th. B-17 damaged over Vienna, flew south past Zagreb, bailed out at 5,000 feet, all members fine. Returned to base to fly again. In Rome, trained under the 10th mountain Division. In June, 1945 came on the USS America.
