    Tom was a 20-year Air Force pilot. He began as a Strategic Air Command KC-135 tanker pilot and then moved to Air Force Systems Command as a research and development pilot flying the C-135 and C-18 (Boeing 707). Some of the programs he participated in included the airborne laser laboratory program, the big crow electronic warfare aircraft program, the Air Force geophysics laboratory aircraft programs, and the advanced range instrumentation aircraft (ARIA) support of the space program .

    After retirement he continued to fly as a Gulfstream aircraft captain. He flew in support of research and development programs, including data collection for the Airborne Laser Program Office and the Big Crow Electronic Warfare Program Office, and also flew as a corporate pilot.
