    Technical Sergeant Robert E. Ponder served in the United States Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945. He flew daily anti-submarine patrols over the Gulf of Mexico as a flight engineer on a B-24 bomber in 1942 and 1943.

    In early 1944 he was assigned to the U.S. Eight Air Force, 351st Bomb Group (Heavy), based in Polebrook, England. T/Sgt Ponder completed 30 missions over occupied France and Germany as a flight engineer on a Boeing B-17 bomber. His service included missions over the landing breaches on June 6, 1944 as well as missions to Schweinfurt, Wurzburg, Bremen and others.
