My father, William C. Keil (Bill), was an aviation enthusiast from a young age. He enjoyed telling the story of the time he took a bus from his home in Arlington, VA during World War II to the airport, got on a DC 3 airplane, flew to Baltimore, and took the train home. Dad graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Aeronautics. He went to work as an engineer for United Airlines in San Francisco, his home. United sent him to Seattle and Washington DC, and he realized he would not be returning to California. He accepted a job as the Director of Quality Control for Northeast Airlines in Boston. After Northeast merged with Delta Airlines, Dad took a job with Ford Motor Company, in charge of airworthiness for Henry Ford’s personal 727. When that plane was sold to the Shah of Iran in 1975, he accepted a job with US Airways. He retired from US Airways in 1990 and went to work with the Regional Airline Association in Washington, D.C. We have home movies of the test flight of the 727. The pilots wore parachutes, and I remember Dad saying, “No one was sure it would fly.” How many times have we flown on the 727? Nearsightedness kept him out of the commercial cockpit, but he enjoyed flying “little airplanes” for most of his adult life. He was a flight instructor for small aircraft for many years. After his retirement from the Regional Airline Association, Dad was a docent for the Air and Space Museum, first at the Mall and then at Udvar Hazy. He loved talking about airplanes! Dad passed away in 2017. I am proud to place his name on the Air and Space Museum Wall of Honor.
