    Wall of Honor Level:
    Air and Space Friend

    Honored by:

    1. Graduated June 1952 from University of Maryland, as Aeronautical Engineer.

    2. Began work at Lockheed Aircraft Corp. June 30, 1952.

    3. Spent 2-1/2 years in various groups in Engineering Department, learning
    Lockheed's working methods and standards.

    4. December 4, 1954 selected to work on design of the U-2 aircraft, Wing Group. The airplane was designed and flew in 8 months. The Design Group included helping in Flight Test as it progressed. We worked at night, reading and reducing data from flight's automatic observer of the pilot's instrument panel. I was fortunate to be reading the film of the flight when the U-2 first went to 70,000 ft. altitude...a very important design point.

    5. In 1956 we started the design of the Lockheed Jetstar, a 10-passenger jet utility transport for the Air Force. It first flew in 1957, 241 days after the design started.

    6. In Dec. 1959 we started the design of the A-12, a prototype of the eventual SR-71, which cruises at Mach 3.2. It first flew in 1961 as the A-12. The SR-71 first flew in 1965. It was built entirely of titanium and was the first aircraft using titanium for complete structure. All curved surface parts had to be finally shaped in a pressure oven at 900 deg.

    7. I worked on these and on other projects that were never in production.

    8. 1977-1978 we started the design of the first stealth aircraft, the F-117-A. We designed the prototype (Have Blue) and then the 117.

I retired from Lockheed in Feb 1991.
