Exploring Today

In years past, astronomers sat for hours bundled against the chill of night in dark observatory domes, their eyes fixed to viewfinders as they painstakingly recorded images of the heavens on photographic plates. Today, whether using a ground- or space-based telescope, an astronomer is more likely to work in a space like this one, eyes fixed on a computer screen.

The scientific model of the Universe pieced together by the 1930s--a Universe of galaxies moving away from one another--still stands. Astronomers today continue to tinker with it, questioning how the Universe developed, how it is structured, how galaxies "work." The pace of discovery is breathtaking, but mysteries abound. The Universe remains a wondrous place, evolving and elegant--and elusive.
