A coffee filter with a string attached, tied to a paper clip.

Ages 6+ | 5-10 min | Craft | Screen Free

Make a model of a parachute.

What You'll  Need:

  • One round coffee filter or tissue paper cut into a circle
  • 2-3" piece of string or yarn
  • Tape

1. Flatten the coffee filter.

Smooth it our as much as you can.

2. Take a 2-3" string to the center.

3. Add a paperclip at the end of the string.

This can represent a person or spacecraft using a parachute, or a seed a dandelion is carrying.

4. Drop it gently.

Hold it up and away from your body. When you drop it the canopy will open.

If your canopy collapses or doesn't float well:

  • Curl the edges of the filter up, shaping it like a cup
  • Attach tape to two opposite places on the edge of the filter, like a counterweight.
