A Lockheed U-2B is photographed in flight. The U-2 was designed in 1954 by Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, who led Lockheed’s Skunk Works design team. Its radical design was based on the fuselage of the F-104 Starfighter, but incorporated a high-aspect-ratio sailplane wing, making it essentially a glider with a jet engine.
