    Charismatic but haughty, Captain Charles Wilkes was an experienced naval commander known for his expertise and accuracy in mapping and charting. Before leading the U.S. Exploring Expedition from 1838-1842, he headed the Navy's Department of Charts and Instruments, where he worked tirelessly on synchronizing marine chronometers.
