    This shell trumpet was collected in Samoa during the U.S. Exploring Expedition, a four-year mission (1838-1842) that surveyed and mapped unknown portions of the Pacific for the U.S. government. Scientists accompanying the expedition collected thousands of natural history and ethnographic specimens like this one to document their travels.
