The lift-off of Gemini-Titan 4 (GT-4) began the Gemini IV mission. Gemini missions were launched on a Titan rocket, a modified intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). At several bases in the United States, Titan missiles fitted with thermonuclear warheads stood sentinel in silos.
