A man sits in the cockpit of an airplane in flying clothes, a flying cap, and goggles on his head. A cigarette hangs casually out of the pilots mouth as he has his hand on the controls. A machine gun is mounted directly in front of his head. A metal plate can be seen by the aircrafts nose, by the propellor. The airplane is on the ground, and another man can seen to the left of the frame standing near the nose of the plane.

Jules Védrines seated at the controls of a Morane-Saulnier Model N on the ground in France, circa 1915. The aircraft shows a machine gun mount and propeller, note the steel deflector plate at the base of the propeller. Crude bullet deflectors like the one in this photo protected a propeller from the plane’s forward-firing machine gun. The deflectors could be ineffective and dangerous.
