German ace Wilhelm "Willi" Hippert with his Fokker D.VII demonstrates a liquid-oxygen breathing system for high-altitude flight in 1918. The pilot, wearing a nose clip, breathes through a pipe-stem type tube held between his teeth which is connected to cylinder affixed to the left side of the cockpit. Note large pocket watch strapped to Hippert's right wrist, over the sleeve of his flying suit.
