French SPAD XIII Smith IV in Legend, Memory, and the Great War in the Air
Pilot Ray Brooks named this French SPAD XIII Smith IV, after his fiancee's college. Painted on the lower-right fuselage is a row of tombstones, one for every mission on which Brooks cheated death. Iron Cross emblems cover bullet holes in the fuselage, wings, and tail, testifying to how close and often death came. Brooks lived to see his airplane displayed in the Museum.
