Maurice Prevost standing in front of his Deperdussin monoplane in 1912, which he used to win the Gordon Bennett Cup. French silk merchant Armand Deperdussin founded a company that built and raced some of the fastest airplanes before World War I. In 1912, his sleek monoplane was the first to top 100 mph (161 km/h).
