"We passed over Tucson and set out course for Yuma jubilantly, but were soon bucking headwinds, which gradually slowed the ship down...We reached Yuma about noon, and were looking down on the city through a sandstorm blowing about fifty miles an hour. This slowed the ship down although we were at standard speed we were making barely twelve knots over the ground. For this reason instead of proceeding directly for San Diego, we decided to head northward, passing to the southward of San Bernardino and then out to the coast."
